Meeting opened at 9:15
- Ray moved to accept the minutes of the April 24th meeting, Chris seconded.
- Budget
- Boat charter for MPA: David, Ray and Chris volunteered their time, we would have to reimburse for fuel costs. Motioned by Ray, seconded by David.
- Veronika is to work 25hrs/wk, if more time is needed that will be reevaluated at a later date. She will be able to bank time and carry it over as time off as required. Motioned by Chris, seconded by Ray.
- Agreed that a separate account will be opened for the tagging company with signatories David Ferguson, Lloyd MacInnes and Richard MacPhee, and that all accounts will be moved from Baddeck to North Sydney for ease of access, motioned by Ray, seconded by Chris.
- Will wait for funding cheques to come in before moving accounts
- Budget approved by Ray, seconded by Chris.
- Funds for the future
- Use of Fish- Adding a lobster license in LFA27 to pay for science (lease out traps throughout the region).
- Concerns include: crowding of fishing grounds, resale of leased traps, issuing of additional licenses for other organizations
- Re asking DFO for funding since their new funding announcements seem promising
- ACTION ITEM: Veronika to send John past proposal
- Will look into science funding options at upcoming meetings (see 8.)
- Summer Research
- Successful sampling and larval tows thanks to donation from Osburne Burke & University of NB.
- Participated in Cod Sentinel within MPA and have requested access to all data collected
- Sampled one halibut trip within MPA
- Emilie met with Craig Brown (NSCC) and cameras will hopefully be tested soon.
- Servicing Fishermen
- Veronika will be working on a Science Report to outline the work that we have done in the past to inform fishermen
- Meetings attended
- Emilie shared notes on MSC and Roundtable meetings, also sent notes via email to all directors
- Licensing changes surrounding vacation times, full time status requirements, sub-operators and long-term medical.

- ACTION ITEM: Veronika to call Geoff regarding our bill.
- Future meetings
- Ray and Veronika to attend MRLAC
- Veronika to attend Halibut Science meeting
- 4VN management board has offered to pay for Ray’s travel to groundfish meetings.
- By-laws
- ACTION ITEM: Veronika to draft new by-laws to be approved by the board
- Tags
- Agreed upon $145/set for both members and non-members motioned by Ray, seconded by Chris
- Agreed upon $1/replacement up to 25 replacements, motioned by Ray, seconded by David
- ACTION ITEM: Emilie to draft Statement of Interest for approval of board, and distribute to members via mail, email and advertise on social media
- Agreed that a separate bank account will be created for the tag company
- Name for the Tag Company will remain the same
- The directors of the society appoint, direct and authorize our recognized agent Veronika Brzeski to sign all documents and to take any steps required in the purchase of the tagging company and any other agreements or contracts which would benefit the society. We ratify any documents that she has signed to date. Motion put forward by Ray and seconded by Chris.
- Name Change
- Going forward with Cape Breton Fish Harvester’s Association, name is reserved with RJS
- Special resolution signed by Chris
- Other business
- Farm and Food Show: Oct 8th, board wants a presence there, Lloyd and Hugh volunteer time and Ray is able to get a small Cape Islander there.
