At 0500 on Friday May 15th, our lobster fleet of 500 boats in east Cape Breton (Lobster Fishing Area 27) will head out loaded with traps to start the season. By Saturday morning to afternoon, boats should be coming into their ports loaded with wonderfully fresh lobster! Come out and get your first fresh feed of the season!

It was a difficult Spring season in which to get ready. Harbours were iced over, sea ice from the Gulf was drifting in coming close to shore, and boats and gear were under snow! Luckily everything cleared in time for our season to start according to schedule — May 15th.

We have 3 students working this summer, at sea : going out on boats measuring catches; and in port: measuring protein levels and molt staging as indicators of quality.  Stay tuned for more on their activities!
